Yes — CDs are among the safest places to hold money. CDs at FDIC-insured banks (or NCUA-insured credit unions) are protected up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution. Your rate is locked at opening, so market swings don't change what your existing CD pays. Is CD interest taxed?
Yes. Interest is taxable as ordinary income in the year it's credited, even if you don't withdraw it — unless the CD sits inside an IRA or other tax-advantaged account. Your bank sends a 1099-INT for interest over $10.
What happens when my CD matures?
