Working Backwards From the Goal
Most people save whatever is left over and hope. Goal-based saving flips it: pick the number and the date, and let math tell you the monthly amount. This calculator accounts for compound interest on both your existing savings and every future deposit, so the required monthly figure is usually pleasantly lower than simple division would suggest.
Making the Number Stick
- Automate it. Set up an automatic transfer for the calculated amount on payday. Saving that happens by default actually happens.
- Park it somewhere that earns. A high-yield savings account or a CD ladder keeps the interest assumption in this calculator realistic.
- Recalculate when life changes. Got a raise, or rates moved? Run the numbers again and adjust the transfer.
Goal Too Far Away?
If the monthly number is out of reach, you have three levers: extend the timeline, lower the target, or raise the return (accepting more risk). Even stretching a 3-year goal to 4 years often cuts the monthly requirement by 25% or more.
